Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact
Learning another language has many benefits and supports children in developing their problem-solving skills memory, critical thinking and listening skills. At Lantern Academy the children are taught the Modern foreign Language French using the Language Angels scheme of learning. It is our intention that the children foster a love of learning another language as well as about the culture of the country in which it originates. It is our intention that by the time the children leave our setting they will have acquired a solid foundation of both spoken and written French. During lessons the children will be given opportunities to practice speaking French with their peers. Although French is our chosen additional language, we expose the children to other languages and cultures, so a secure understanding of the wider world is achieved.
When the children move into Key Stage Two, they have a timetabled weekly French lesson. The lessons are designed to motivate the children through a range of creative, practical, speaking, listening and written activities. Adults model the pronunciation, and opportunities are provided for the children to practice this too. The themes and topics, taken from the Language Angels scheme of work, introduce the children to opportunities to learn colours, foods, animals to name a few. In Key Stage One, children are taught basic French during registration times and are encouraged to answer the register using simple one-word responses. Across the academy children are exposed to bilingual stories and dictionaries. Our languages curriculum provides the right foundations in preparation for their Key Stage Three language lessons.
Our languages curriculum will ensure all children develop the key language learning skills set out by the national curriculum. Our aim is for children to love languages and learning about different cultures. By the end of Key Stage Two children will be able to speak in French with increasing confidence by asking and answering simple questions. Children will have developed their accuracy in pronunciation and intonation when communicating in French. They will be able to write simple sentences in French, using the grammatical structures they have learned. We will assess children’s capabilities through observations of speaking and listening activities and by marking children’s written work. Teacher assessments are recorded on our data tracking system Insight. Te subject leader for French will monitor the teaching of languages through lesson drop ins, book looks and discussions with children.
