Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact
At Lantern Primary and Nursery we recognise that we live in a world where technology is an integral part of society. We want all our children to receive a high-quality computing curriculum. Weekly lessons are delivered using a range of approaches, so that children have opportunities to find out, explore, analyse, exchange and present information. We focus on a different element of computing each half term and lessons are delivered following a sequence of learning ensuring children’s skills and knowledge are built on; recapping on prior understanding and learning new information. An element we constantly revise and spiral back to is how children can be safe online and what to do if they don’t feel safe. This information is shared with our parents and families so together we can promote using the internet sensibly.
Children present their learning using a range of methods including through electronic devices, spoken and written accounts, this allows children to know and remember more. We believe this enables children to develop their understanding as well as build upon their curiosity so they can confidently use technology in their everyday lives.
We make direct links to other subject areas and demonstrate to the children that computing can be incorporated into all learning and its relevance and purpose in the 21st Century.
Lantern Primary and Nursery’s computing curriculum is written using the scheme of learning Teach Computing. It covers the three main computing strands of Information Technology, Digital Literacy and Computer Science. Through these components children work on understanding the concepts of logic, algorithms, analysing data and representing it in different ways, safely creating, saving and retrieving documents as well as test, write and debug computer programs using appropriate support and scaffolds.
Our computing curriculum was written using the scheme of learning Teach Computing. Sequences of learning have been created providing teachers with the key information that needs to be taught. This matches the expectations set out in the National Curriculum for computing and ensures that the three components of Information Technology, Digital Literacy and Computer Science are embedded throughout the academic year. Progression maps ensure that skills and knowledge are built on year on year, this leads to children having a secure understanding of all concepts associated with computing as well as preparing them to live in an ever-changing digital world.
Alongside the three main strands of computing, we explicitly teach Online Safety. We recognise that most of our children have access to digital devices at home and therefore dedicate a topic to this important area. In addition, we spiral back and revise these messages ensuring the children: know how to be safe online, the dangers of cyberbullying, making sure we keep our personal information private, the age limits for the use of social media and the importance of communicating sensibly through digital applications. These important messages are passed on to parents and our ‘Acceptable Use’ agreement makes these expectations explicit. Dedicated assemblies further embed this understanding and ensure these messages and held in high regard.
A range of resources are used to support the children’s learning and their recording of understanding. Children also have access to a range of software which they access within the academy and can use to support home learning. Class books capture elements of every lesson and allow children to use these so they can remember previous learning. Conversations between adults and children and using peer to peer support demonstrate the children’s understanding.
Our Continuous Professional Development offer incorporates computing and ensures teachers are confident and secure in the delivery of this subject area.
We want all children leaving Lantern Primary and Nursery to have a secure and comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and skills associated with computing, so they have the firm foundations of being successful citizens in the digital society we live. Both the British Values and our Academy Values are interwoven into the curriculum teaching the children the importance of tolerance, democracy, mutual respect, rule of law and individual liberty.
Children are assessed through adult led and peer to peer conversations and discussions. Learning and progress is tracked on Insight giving teachers a clear understanding of how well each individual child is doing in each sequence of learning. This ensures that children leave Lantern Primary and Nursery with a secure and comprehensive understanding of technology and digital systems.
