Pupil premium and sports premium
The pupil premium is funding provided to academies for pupils who are eligible for free school meals and pupils in local authority care.
What is the pupil premium and where does the money come from?
The pupil premium is funding provided to academies for pupils who are eligible for free school meals and pupils in local authority care. These groups of students have been identified nationally as achieving at a lower level than pupils from less disadvantaged backgrounds.
The allocation to academies is based on the number of pupils on-roll who are currently known to be eligible for free school meals, a smaller amount is allocated according to the number of children of service families and there is an allocation for each pupil who has been looked after in local authority care continuously for more than six months.
A premium has also been introduced for pupils whose parents are currently serving in the different forces. Pupils entitled to forces premium will not have priority on the admissions oversubscription criteria – only those entitled to free school meals will count as pupil premium in our criteria.
What is PE and sports premium and where does the money come from?
The PE and sport premium is funding for primary schools to spend on helping pupils to be more healthy and active. The amount of funding schools get is based on the number of pupils they have aged 5 to 10.
Primary schools should use this funding to make improvements to the PE, sport, and physical activity they provide, such as:
- Funding high-quality PE and sport for at least 2 hours a week
- Providing a wide range of extracurricular sport and competitive opportunities
- Providing or improving equal access to sport for boys and girls
The Department for Education also identifies 5 key priorities for improvement:
- Increasing all staff’s confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport
- Increasing engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity and sport
- Raising the profile of PE and sport across the school, to support whole school improvement
- Offering a broader and more equal experience of a range of sports and physical activities to all pupils
- Increasing participation in competitive sport
