Pupil council and champions

At Lantern Primary and Nursery

We prioritise our pupils’ voices

ensuring they feel connected to the academy and empowered to influence their own experiences as well as those of their peers. Through various councils, groups, and leadership initiatives, we champion both national and local community themes.

Head and Deputy Boys and Girls

Staff collaborate on making the decisions on who will be the head and deputy boys and girls. These children are identified as setting high expectations for their own attitude towards learning and behaviour. They welcome visitors to the academy and point them in the direction of the signing in process and where an activity is taking place. These children also support in the running of the celebration assemblies and ensure all certificates and paperwork are collated ready for the assembly.

Other roles we have across the academy are advertised in the Job Shop. Children respond to an advert by completing a job application and then attending an interview. Successful applicants are then trained, enabling them to fulfil their role adequately.

Pupil council

The pupil council is a committed group of children who has been elected by their peers. They act as representatives and a voice for their peers in bringing forward and discussing academy issues as well as raising money for both our academy and selected charities.

The council meet regularly and discuss issues such as:

  • Ways to improve attendance
  • School lunches
  • Improving the toilet facilities
  • Improving break and lunchtimes
  • Charitable events to raise money for things identified as priorities such as playground equipment or events that have impacted the local community or world.

Our pupil council are passionate about supporting our academy and the wider community.

Health and Safety Warriors

The health and safety warriors are a group of enthusiastic children who support adults in looking at aspects of safety through a child’s eye. They take part in termly walks with the Estates Manager and Health and Safety Governor and work together to keep our academy a tidy and safe environment. These children can often be found picking up coats and bags that have fallen off pegs and litter picking during their break and lunchtimes.

We are proud of our health and safety warriors and appreciate the hard work and determination they have shown towards our academy environment to ensure that we have a happy, safe and tidy academy.

Safeguarding Squad

The Safeguarding Squad plays a crucial role in embedding a culture of safety and well-being within the academy. By involving pupils in safeguarding initiatives, we empower them to take responsibility for themselves and their friends, fostering a strong sense of community and awareness.

Key Initiatives Led by the Safeguarding Squad Include:

  • Safeguarding Assemblies: The Safeguarding Squad leads school-wide assemblies on important safeguarding issues, helping to raise awareness among children about how to stay safe both online and offline.
  • Competitions and Engagement: To engage pupils with key safeguarding messages, the Safeguarding Squad organises school-wide competitions and activities, such as themed weeks around Anti-Bullying and Online Safety.
  • Playground Monitors: Members of the Safeguarding Squad help monitor behaviour during break times, ensuring that playground equipment is used safely and that all children feel included and protected.
  • Safeguarding Squad Display: The team updates a central display board with current safeguarding projects, making it a visible reminder for all children of the ongoing importance of safety and well-being at Lantern Academy.

We take pride in the active involvement of our pupils through the Safeguarding Squad, as it helps us maintain a happy, safe, and nurturing academy environment where every child can learn, grow, and feel secure.

House Captains

The house captains are a group of children who have a keen interest in physical education and sports. They are passionate about improving the sporting experience of every child. Each class in key stage 2 have two representative whose job it is to help staff and their peers in getting the equipment and tidying it away for PE lessons as well as sporting competitions. They also identify children who take part in sporting activities outside of the academy and take photographs, regularly updating our display. They act as ambassadors for sport and PE and support others in mastering key skills during lessons. This student body also play an active role in the running of sports day.

Our house captains are dedicated to their role, and we are proud of all the work they put into improving physical education and sports within the academy.

Prefects

Our team of prefects support our younger children in the hall by helping them collect their dinner, pour any drink they may want and tidying up. They help clean the lunch tables at the end of dinner and are a model good manners when eating.

Play Leaders

Our play leaders work hard in supporting providing activities during unstructured times. They help get out and tidy the equipment and lead games with groups of children. These children are identified because of their responsible behaviour on the playground. They have worked closely with The Chance to Shine and Local Authority Play Leader trainers to develop the skills needed for this role. These children make a difference to the positive experiences children have on the playground.

Librarians

Librarians are appointed if they apply for the post in the job shop. They have responded to an advert, completed an application form and taken part in an interview. Our English Lead supports them in their role and offers training. These children have fostered a love for books and will ensure the library areas are tidy, display books that interest our diverse pupils and read to younger children.
