Transitions

At Lantern Primary and Nursery

We understand that transitions can be a significant milestone in a child's educational journey.

Whether your child is joining us for the first time, moving between year groups, or preparing to transition to secondary school, we are committed to making these changes as smooth and positive as possible. Our dedicated staff work with pupils and their families to provide the support and guidance needed during these periods.

For children transitioning into Lantern Primary and Nursery, we offer a comprehensive induction program. This includes a tour around the academy and at least one taster session. Taster sessions take place in an afternoon, so children can meet their peers in a less formal manner before starting with us on their first day. We believe this method helps ensure that every child feels valued, comfortable, and excited to begin their educational journey with us.

As children move between year groups, we provide structured programs to support these internal transitions. Children have the chance to spend time in their new classrooms during formal planned transition sessions as well as throughout the year where they take part in sessions including ‘self-choose RATL’ and reading buddy’s. This process enables children to meet their new teachers and participate in activities that build familiarity and ease any anxieties. Our teachers collaborate to ensure a seamless progression in learning, making sure that each child continues to build on their knowledge and skills year after year.

We recognise the challenge transitioning to secondary can present challenges for some children; therefore, we collaborate with high school settings at the earliest opportunity. Initially we provide parents and children with the dates so families can visit prospective secondary schools thus making an informed decision during the application process. Once notifications of offers come through, the year 6 teacher, headteacher, child and family support officer and SENDCo meet with representatives from each of the secondary schools the children are transitioning to. We support children by accompanying them, if necessary, on visits to their new setting both before and after the formal transition days. Many of our children transition to a secondary school within the Learning Community Trust enabling us to continue conversations once children have started in year 7. This robust transition offer ensures children are ready for the next chapter of their education academically, emotionally and socially. Any important information is transferred over to the new school when the child starts.

By fostering a supportive and nurturing environment, we help our children embrace change with resilience and enthusiasm, paving the way for continued success and growth. Our goal is to ensure that every transition is a positive and empowering experience for our children and their families.
